My Relationship with Popular Books

Hyped books are like the cool kids in high school: flawless and well-loved. Everyone looks up to them, everyone wants them on their shelves, everyone likes them. You can all agree when I also say that popular books have the most gorgeous covers ever.

However, I feel like I’m that one person in this high school of popular books who doesn’t like most of them. The first popular book that I’ve read and didn’t like was Anna and the French Kiss. I read it in early 2013 and it was not that hyped then like it is now so I wasn’t that disappointed because I wasn’t expecting anything from it. When I joined the bookstagram community on Instagram last August I was surprised that everyone loves it except me. Overall, I think the book was pretty okay but I didn’t expect it to get a lot of attention.

See what I meant about popular books getting all the gorgeous covers? I’ve read To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before last summer again, I wasn’t expecting anything from it. But I wasn’t that connected with the main character Lara Jean and I was not okay with her going after her sister’s ex-boyfriend it’s just unacceptable *cringe*. Peter made me swoon though. There are cute scenes but I was surprised when I also found out that everyone is loving this book. I though it’s an okay read and my reading life would be okay without having read it.

Last year I also read the Mara Dyer trilogy and I was so disappointed with it. The plot sound really interesting, the series has creepy but gorgeous covers, the title caught my attention and everyone is in love with the trilogy so I decided to start it before the third book comes out. The beginning of the first book is creepy and I’m into creepy books so I finished it though I didn’t like Noah Shaw. Yeah, you heard that right: I didn’t like Noah Shaw. He is just too perfect and I don’t like male main characters perfect, I want them to be realistic. That being said, I want characters with flaws. I began the second book with the hope that it will get better. Nope. But I still read the third book because I had so much faith with the story. I may not like the whole trilogy but I like Mara Dyer she’s a real badass but I didn’t like her in the third book. The other characters are pretty amazing though. I didn’t regret reading this trilogy though (okay, a little) because it made me realize that I’m not liking the popular books like other people.

The series I’m thinking of not finishing is the Lux series by JLA. I think I’m the only one who doesn’t like the books and I stopped at book two. I just don’t want to invest in a series I probably won’t like in the end. I don’t want to make the same mistake I did with the Mara Dyer trilogy. I’m thinking of just googling the end of this series. But I think the main reason why I didn’t like the first two books is because I’m not into NA that much in general.

But of course I’ve read other popular books that I’ve loved like The Hunger Games, The DUFF and The Selection trilogy.

I have other popular books that I didn’t like in my list but now I’m that I’ve completely realized I’m not into hyped books I’m hesitant about starting some well-loved series and stand-alones. I’m not sure whether the Throne of Glass series is for me because what if I won’t like it? I just wasted my time reading it. I want to read Lola and the Boy Next Door even though I didn’t like Anna and the French Kiss because I’m into boys next door lol.

In the end though I think that I shouldn’t judge the book without having read it just because it’s popular (that’s pretty ironic, isn’t it?). So I’ll still try to put some popular books on my tbr this year.

What popular/hyped books you though you would like but didn’t? What popular/hyped books will you suggest that I read now?
