My rating: ★★★
Genre: Contemporary, with Science Fiction thrown in there (I honestly don’t know how to categorize this book)
Publication Date: July 2, 2015
Synopsis from Goodreads:
In a stunning literary debut, two boys on opposite ends of the world begin an unlikely friendship that will change their lives forever.
Ollie and Moritz are best friends, but they can never meet. Ollie is allergic to electricity. Contact with it causes debilitating seizures. Moritz’s weak heart is kept pumping by an electronic pacemaker. If they ever did meet, Ollie would seize. But Moritz would die without his pacemaker. Both hermits from society, the boys develop a fierce bond through letters that become a lifeline during dark times—as Ollie loses his only friend, Liz, to the normalcy of high school and Moritz deals with a bully set on destroying him.
A story of impossible friendship and hope under strange circumstances, this debut is powerful, dark and humorous in equal measure. These extraordinary voices bring readers into the hearts and minds of two special boys who, like many teens, are just waiting for their moment to shine.
My review:
Thank you to Bloomsbury for providing me an ARC via NetGalley. This does not affect my review in any way.
Writing this review is very hard because this is a very good book but the ending just felt a little weird to me. Let’s get first to the parts I liked most:
- This is a book told in the way of letters which is very cool! I love letters!
- Told by two dudes with very different personality. I didn’t even have to scroll back a few pages just to see who is talking, just by the way the two main characters tell stuffs you can already know who is talking in the letter.
- Epic plot. I first found out about this book on Bee’s blog and the plot just captured me. Basically, Ollie has an “allergy” with electricity. He can’t be near it so he has to live with his mom in a cabin in the woods. Moritz has a pacemaker so he and Ollie can’t ever meet.
- Total friendship goals. I love the friendship between Ollie and Moritz. They brought out the best in each other and in a way, it reminded me of some of my online friends. If you’re looking for a great friendship book, this is it.
- It’s half-set in Germany!
- Beautiful writing. I’m looking forward to read more of the author’s next books.
- I’m also absolutely in love with the cover! I love book covers with pictures of skies on them!
But…
…the ending was kinda weird. It just didn’t feel like the right ending for this kind of book. However, it’s actually cool that there’s a bit of sci-fi thrown in it too.
This is a really good book but I had trouble reading it because there are some boring parts. The side character, Liz also annoyed me so damn much. Liz is such a little bitch. (I had trouble typing this because one of my online friends is named Liz.)
I recommend this book to any contemporary lovers and maybe even to some sci-fi books fans. I can’t wait to hear what all of you think about this book.
Are there any books you’ve read with some weird endings?
I really enjoyed this one.I totally understand the ending kind of went all sci-fi out of nowhere and that can turn people off though. Great review!

Yeah but I also think it added a little something to the story. Thank you! 🙂

I’m not interested in books written in letters, but absolutely love the sound of the friendship in this one! Some bookish friendships are toxic, and I’m glad this one is the complete opposite of that. ❤ Awesome review, Angel!

I was gifted an ARC of this one, so if I choose to DNF at least there won’t be that guilt, but UGH I’m just not sure! Sometimes I think it’ll be like WOW I’m going to love it, and other times I think I’ll just be meh the whole time. At least some parts worked out for you!

The thing that pushed me to read this book is the weird ending everyone was talking about! I was really bored at some parts.

I read another review of this that mentioned the weird ending. I’m curious. haha I DNFed this one actually – I liked parts of it, and the overall premises, but it just wasn’t working for me.

Omg I totally agree about that ending! For me, it spoiled the whole book. It just felt so..fantasy, when the book had been going so strongly contemporary-ish. But Olly was so adorable, and I loved Moritz’s candid attitude. He was seriously rude at the beginning right?! A+ character development.
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!
